Day 1!

It it about 9:00pm here, and I am preparing for bed. This is probably the earliest I've gone to bed in years, but we are all exhausted. I woke up at 8:45 on Wednesday and finished packing. My parents drove me to Lexington Airport. Our flight from Lexington to Chicago was a little over an hour and then we had about 2 hours until our next flight. I did not enjoy the second flight. I was seated next to a five year old girl who did not leave me alone the entire 4 and a half hours. The 12 hour flight to Auckland was not bad at all for me. I managed to sleep about 9 hours on the plane, and I woke up with only 3 hours until landing. Dr. Fernandez and Brittany got a little bit of sleep, but poor Dr. Lindsey did not sleep at all. We had three good flights, but we all don't want to think about flying again for a long time!

Dr. Lindsey's sister Bryony picked us up from the airport where we received our rental car and drove back to her house. For lunch we had sandwiches on delicious bread. Brittany, Dr. Fernandez, and I settled into our caravans and organized our luggage. At 2, we left to pick up the twins, Robert and Sofya, up from school. Their school is the first one we will be visiting Monday so it was exciting to see it. We went to the shoe store to buy Dr. Lindsey some shoes (she accidentally wore two different ones all day) and stopped at a cafe. Then, we went to an electronic store to get phone cards and a wireless modem. After that, we headed to the grocery store where we got some food and toiletries.

Dr. Lindsey set up the modem, and Brittany and I were able to use skype. The kids really enjoyed talked to our boyfriends in America. We had muscles as an appetizer before dinner. I was able to eat them if I did think too much about what I was eating. I ate three of them. Martin, Bryony's husband, cooked steak for dinner. They recently had a cow killed for fresh meat so the steaks were delicious. After dinner, Brittany and I read the kids a book to get them to sleep. They are really excited that we are here and they enjoy going in our caravan and playing games with us.

Overall, it has been a great first day in Auckland. The scenery is so green and beautiful, and I have already taken so many pictures. It is hard to believe we are finally here. One of the things that is hard for me to get used to is the fact that New Zealanders drive on the opposite side of the road. At one point, I though a five year old was driving because he was on the American driver's side. I was able to try a lot of new things today including eating the muscles and feijoa (a small green fruit that grows in Bryony's backyard). Brittany and I are still getting used to the lingo, and we learned a few new words today (i.e. togs and jandals). I am really happy to finally be here and am looking forward to going into the schools and exploring more of New Zealand.
